about

In the summer of 2008, I tried to bum up $0.50 at a jiffy mart off 4th and Main to get a little jug of juice. This guy that got me my jug of juice had a Misfits shirt on & became a lifelong friend. He showed me parts of punk rock that I was not aware of being bands like Minor Threat, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Leftover Crack, Against Me!, Germs, Circle Jerks & Bad Brains.

Attempting to write a song about him was more than I had bargained for because it needed to contain the same dosage of love for punk rock as the love we had for one another with references to The Misfits, his son who died of SIDS (unfortunately I never took the opportunity to meet him while living only 45 minutes north), Florida’s one and only Lake County, SLC Punk, his recent move to Colorado, Eustis Busker Festival and all the different acoustics you can find there & lastly albums by Rancid, Dead Kennedys, Leftover Crack, & Against Me.

Throughout our relationship, I had stayed with this guy so many times while squatting around Duval County. He always told folks that I lived in his closet when given the opportunity. When me and my mom were fighting, he would tell her that I was crazy, sick from alcohol & to send me over to his house so he could talk some sense into me. One of my favorite closets he offered was off Lane Ave. Every day that he would climb a ladder to make his rent, I’d walk across the street to a nearby jiffy store and busk up enough for smokes, food & beer.

We both went through financial troubles over and over again. Not being able to afford bills because we were getting too fucked up all the time at punk shows & not being able to count on our romantic partners because they were bound to leave us for our lack of financial & emotional dependability.

One proud feat I’ve had with these lyrics was a reference to Steve and Heroin Bob of SLC Punk. In the movie, it’s stated that Steve and Bob were the first two punks and the last two punks of Salt Lake. To this day, anytime we talk to one another we’re normally saying to each other “first two, last two” as a greeting or farewell.

I’ve numbered the days since driftin through one last caress
I’ve closed my eyes, I’ve tried to sort through my mess
The Dead River’s tide ain’t ever carried me home
I’ve said goodbye one too many times from the road
You walked away
Once that bottle ran empty
& the bills, they were bound to be late
You never did stay
You always left me alone
When I’ve tried to drown out the pain
On that Colorado wind pass the first two vacancy signs
I found acoustics in Eustis that brought the last two towns to mind
With no need for more Rancid, Dead Kennedys and Leftover Crack
I’m screaming Sink Florida Sink, I’m hoping you’re calling me back
You walked away
Once that bottle ran empty
& the bills, they were bound to be late
You never did stay
You always left me alone
When I’ve tried to drown out the pain
